It’s hard to believe that summer is already here. This winter was an especially a tough one. In our area, work was delayed on numerous projects due to funding and inclement weather. Now that we are past spring and into early summer, the work paints a much better picture. Jobs have been picking up statewide and are expected to increase in the next few months. Higher Education and waste water treatment plants have been bidding like crazy. Both of these types of projects have a tremendous amount of masonry on them and should keep our members busy.

I had been working almost non-stop on the Western States Brick, Tile, and Marble Apprenticeship Contest during the past 3 months. It was a huge undertaking and I am definitely glad it’s now behind us. The contest went off without a hitch. I would like to personally thank everyone who helped us. Without the help of our members, there is no way we could have showcased Portland in the top-notch manner that we did. I would also like to say congratulations to our apprentices for a job well done.

Shawn Lenczowski stepped into the office of Apprenticeship Coordinator at very busy time. He helped both Keith and I put the finishing details on the contest (and always had a smile on his face while doing so). I am very excited for the new direction the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council is headed. Both Shawn and I have some great ideas on new classes and training for our apprentices.
As you all know, the tool selection here has been dwindling.   I have been placing orders on gloves, trowels, and brushes and should have them here soon. If there is something you are looking for in particular, be sure to call me first before coming down.

If you are not currently working and have not called in to let me know, be sure to call the office on a weekly basis and get your name and contact number on the informal out of work list. I frequently get calls from out of state, and local contractors looking for manpower. I am doing everything I can to put all of you to work. If you have any questions, be sure to call me and show up to a Union meeting. We will help you the best that we can.
Best wishes and hope to see all of you soon,

Matt Eleazer
